  • Details
An antique and quite rare milk glass candy dish from the original Atterbury company of Pennsylvania. Our sweet kitty sits on the rectangular lid of a dish surrounded by lace or "dancing sailor" design work. Under the dish are the words "Pat.d August 6, 1889. The dish has a few stress marks (common on a delicate piece of this age) and the lid has a chip in the lower corner, which is hard to see with the lid on the dish. There is a tiny chip on the cat's ear. Obviously a well-loved and much used candy dish.
Atterbury was the first company to make milk glass dishes and glassware and they were in business until 1902. The Westmoreland company started making reproductions a few decades later but in addition to the Atterbury patent mark, we can tell this is an original because of the very clear and distinct texture of the fur and whiskers.
Apparently, the eyes are the first to go on this dishes but I found this cat with two plastic pink replacement eyes which I removed but I'll send them along in a separate bag in case you want them. Not a perfect specimen of Atterbury milk glass but all in all, a great piece to add to your collection.
